We slept in Monday, with no set plans. It was a cold and dreary day in Christchurch, but we spent the afternoon walking through town and visited the Canterbury Museum.
Christchurch is New Zealand's oldest city, founded in 1850 or so - lots of old historical buildings. The most famous is the Christchurch Cathedral:

Some of the old buildings have a new purpose. Like Australia, there is a Coffee House on every corner (we'd kill for some good ol' fashioned drip coffee - have these folks not heard of Mr. Coffee ???!!!!)

We spent most of our time in the Canterbury Museum, located by the botanical gardens. It's a great museum, covering the history and settlement of New Zealand, as well as the geology, and they even have a special section on Antarctic Exploration - we're going back Wednesday to a new exhibit on the Antartic Explorers.

Funny to come all this way and find a piece of meteorite from Arizona in Christchurch ...

This one's for Olivia and Victoria ...

Yes, I know the guy on the right is a bit creepy ...

It stopped raining, so we ventured outside the museum on our way to find a late lunch/early dinner.

We ate at the Belgian Beer Cafe - which came highly recommended by the ladies we met on the train, and it turned out to be just what we were looking for.

The Casino is directly across from our hotel - so far I've saved my pennies and not tested my luck.

Our hotel - the Crowne Plaza, doesn't fit in with the historical buildings in the city, but it's a nice hotel with a friendly staff. We're staying at downtown hotels for the New Zealand leg of our trip, makes it easy to get around since we've no car.

And, the view from our hotel room early evening - it had stopped raining but was still cold.
